Description

Thishandbook will be published by Edward Elgar Publishing as part of its Ag=
eing,Work and Welfare Series. The volume aims to include around 25 chapters=
of originalempirical research from any relevant discipline including inter=
disciplinarywork and analyses of professional practice cases and examples. =
Ethnographicallyrich chapters that speak to policy challenges are very welc=
ome.=20

Amidmuch international debate about the economic and social implications of=
increasing longevity and efforts to promote successful ageing this book wil=
l beconcerned with the influence of cumulative advantage and disadvantage o=
npeople=E2=80=99s later life transitions and outcomes, with a focus on issu=
es ofemployment, retirement, wealth, morbidity and mortality. The book will=
considerwho will be the winners and losers in the global longevity race an=
d how publicpolicy will need to be reshaped in response. Chapters will focu=
s on education, race and ethnicity, gender, occupational history and geograp=
hy as factors thatmay determine how successful people are at ageing. We aim=
to cover a broad rangeof contexts from around the world.=20

Inparticular, we are interested to hear from prospective authors of empiric=
ally richstudies that address complexities of systemic inequalities for age=
ingpopulations, including ageing populations within demographically young c=
ountriesor communities. We envisage chapters approaching intersections of i=
nequalities andageing from a range of perspectives and disciplines.

We areseeking contributions of approximately 5000 words that relate to the =
following themesand would be pleased to discuss other ideas from potential =
contributors.=20

-- firstnations, ethnic minority and migrant communities including cross-cu=
ltural,intercultural, etc

-- under-representedor socially marginalised groups and communities such as=
LGBTIQ+, non-binary, religiousminorities, childless people and others

-- peopleliving with congenital, acquired or age-related dis/ability, menta=
l illness, chronicillness, end-of-life care

-- diverseworkers, such as high skill, low skill, informal and migrant labo=
ur, debt slavesand gig workers

-- retirementmobility such as =E2=80=98grey nomads=E2=80=99, transnational =
retirement, international medicaltourism, etc

-- prisoners, detainees, patients and inmates of other institutional setting=
s

-- sociallyvulnerable people, for example in rural or remote locations, hom=
eless,stateless, unemployed, widowed and lonely

Weencourage authors to identify relevant policy gaps and to consider thecum=
ulative effect of mainstream policy challenges, such as historical racialpo=
licies, gender pay gap, digital divide or unconscious bias, on economicsecu=
rity, longevity and inequalities in later life.=20

We particularlywelcome contributions from first nations, minority, disabled=
, LGBTIQ+,non-binary and under-represented scholars and authors.

Abstractsare being collected the end of October 2021. Contributions will be=
required bythe end of February 2022 and the book will be published by the =
end of 2022.
