Greetings from new co-convenors

Dear AnthroMobbers,

Following AnthroMob=92s annual meeting at the EASA conference in Barcelona,= we are delighted to introduce ourselves as the network=92s new convenors.

Elise Hjalmarson is weeks away from defending her PhD in Anthropology and S= ociology at the Geneva Graduate Institute in Switzerland. Situated at the c= rossroads of migration and gender studies, her dissertation interrogates qu= estions of transnational belonging and ways of being among the Cuban diaspo= ra in Spain. In January 2025, Elise will begin a SNF Postdoc.Mobility Fello= wship at the University of California, Berkeley, where she will undertake h= er project =93The Affective Horizons of (Im)Mobility: Cuban and Nicaraguan = Migrants Travelling Along the Volcanic Route=94.

Sonja Faaren Ruud is a postdoctoral researcher at KU Leuven in Belgium work= ing on the interdisciplinary ERC-funded COLLAB project - =93Collaborative P= ractices of Making Literature in Contexts of Displacement and Migration=94 =

  • where she studies collaborative writing projects by and for people with m= igration and multilingual backgrounds in European cities. Before this, Sonj= a=92s PhD research explored mobilities on a different scale: her dissertati= on (from the Geneva Graduate Institute) explored questions of value and dev= aluation vis-=E0-vis Luxembourg=92s 2020 transition to fare-free public tra= nsport.

Elise and Sonja met on the first day of their PhD program in Geneva, where = they realized that they had both just moved to Europe from Nicaragua (where= they may or may not have seen each other on the streets of Leon or in a Ma= nagua salsa bar). Over the years, they have collaborated on several project= s and look forward to working together as your 2024-2026 AnthroMob convenor= s.

Wishing you all a wonderful start to the new academic year and stay tuned f= or more about our upcoming activities! Elise and Sonja
