Join us for 50 films in 10 Days – Freiburger Filmforum May 12th - 21st

Fw:

Dear friends of the Freiburger Filmforum,

We’re excited to announce the 2023 Program!

This year the FREIBURGER FILMFORUM – FESTIVAL OF TRANSCULTURAL CINEMA looks ahead and questions the future(s) in diverse ways. The 20th edition showcases a diverse selection of works that explore engagement with potential futures, often conveying a palpable sense of resistance to dystopian realities. Images of the present will serve as an interface to the future, as a vivid living space in which one can navigate in manifold ways.

The program FILMING FUTURES, curated by Emergent Futures CoLab, explores ways in which film might provide us with opportunities to intervene, provoke and/or collaborate around imagining and performing new futures. Saul William’s and Anisia Uzeyman’s fantastic musical feature Neptune Frost sets the tone for the collaborative series HACKING TIME MINES that includes afrofuturist visionary Sun Ra’s brilliant sci-fi classic Space is the Place. Expanding the main section’s contribution, THE FUTURE IN TODAY features highlights of international festivals exploring present-day future scenarios which already unfold in the here-and-now.

Two documentary series travel from Siberia to the Amazon featuring strong social concerns: FAMILIES IN FOCUS is a film section that portrays families in times of radical uncertainty and crisis through an intimate lens. VEINS OF LIFE: Routes, paths, and trails are the main protagonists of this collection. Films of setting out, wandering, wondering, stagnation, and arrival.

Unusual perspectives and personal approaches to their subjects characterize the films of the STUDENTS' PLATFORM. Curated from over three hundred submissions, this section showcases a multi-faceted selection of 16 international debut and student films of all lengths, shot in 14 countries.

Co-curating and exchanging programs with other cultural institutions as well as connecting with audiences and curators worldwide is the aim of our #JUNCTIONS format. We are experimenting with synchronized screenings and joint film discussions with our partners Conflictorium, National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad and Docubox in Nairobi.

More than 50 short and feature-length films from over 40 countries invite you to explore the diversity and complexity of our world from multiple perspectives. Over 40 filmmakers will present their films in person. All films will be screened in original version with English subtitles. Tickets are on sale now and can be pre-ordered here.

Join us for 10 days of international films and film talks accompanied by an extensive side program with live events, panel discussions, a photo exhibition, and a rich workshop series focusing on current debates in visual anthropology and documentary film.

Can’t join us in person? A selection of live events will be streamed via Cinemalovers, so you can participate in our conversations wherever you are!

Dive into our 20th program with us: May 12 – 21st, 2023!
