My name is Matthew Syrett. I am a new member of the list.
I am a documentary and fiction filmmaker who began his career as an anthropologist and archaeologist. I have an undergraduate Anthropology degree from the University of Michigan and an Anthropology MA from UC Santa Barbara. I have recently received a film MFA from the American Film Institute with a focus on Screenwriting. My anthro graduate work explored the origins of social complexity in Europe during the Mesolithic, which included an extensive study of ethnographies of sedentary hunter-gatherers worldwide.
As a filmmaker, I am best known for producing the Academy Award-winning film Freeheld and serving as the lead story producer for the Netflix docuseries MerPeople. I am presently pitching a project on people who want to live forever and what they will do to achieve this goal... including assisted suicide followed by immidate freezing of their bodies with hopes that future science can bring them back.
Beyond this work, I have been a Vice President at a leading Ad Agency and have worked extensively in on-line marketing and product development. I am additionally well versed in issues of talent analysis and entertainment network graph theory.
What excites me about this list is how it combines two of my deep passions -- the exploration of humanity and working in the visual medium of film and television. I am based in Los Angeles (in the belly of the Hollywood Beast) but my work is increasingly drawing me to Europe once more -- including recent work in Serbia and France.
