VANEASA panel in Poznan & meeting (postponed)
Dear colleagues interested in visual anthropology
We would like to invite you to join the VANEASA panel at the EASA Conference in Poznan, titled “Polarised Digital Images: On Computer Vision in Visual Anthropology”, curated by Zora Ritz of the University of Bern and Alexandra Deem of the Ca' Foscari University of Venice. The panel takes place Thursday 23 July, 11:30-13:15 in the Biologicum building, room O72. The panel examines how computer vision and AI image generation create, reproduce, and reinforce socio-political polarizations, urging Visual Anthropology to critically engage with them. Find more information here: https://nomadit.co.uk/conference/easa2026/p/18582#.
We would also like to draw your attention to the film programme of the EASA conference, with an amazing selection of new films made by anthropologists and anthropology-adjacent filmmakers. Find more information here: https://easaonline.org/easa-conference/easa2026/easa2026-film-festival/#convenors.
Of special interest is also the presentation of the new multimodal monograph "Island in the Net. Digital Culture in Post-Castro Cuba” by Steffen Köhn (Aarhus University) on Wednesday July 22, 6pm at ROZBRAT.
This year there will be no VANEASA network meeting at the conference. The reason is that we - the panel conveners - both have other obligations at the time of the conference. However, we’ll organise an online network meeting before the end of the year. If you wish to bring in any points to discuss or any upcoming activities you would like to announce/discuss, you can write to us so that we can already put it on the agenda for that meeting.
One of the activities under preparation in 2027 is a new student film programme as part of the VANDA conference, the Vienna Anthropology Days in February 2027. If you know of student films you believe are worthy of showcasing, please look out for the call for film submissions - it will be out soon. The VANDA conference is announced here: https://univie.eventsair.com/vanda2027/ and the call for films will be online soon.
Best wishes, Michaela Schäuble (University of Bern) and Sanderien Verstappen (University of Vienna) VANEASA panel conveners
