In Palestine, there are long traditions of faz’a (فزعة), or mutual aid, ranging from collective practices of agricultural work to home rebuilding after an Israeli demolition to collective defense of someone being bullied or targeted. Amidst the Israeli genocide in Gaza, mass starvation, constant displacements, and bombings, practices of faz’a continue to emerge as Palestinians have focused on survival and supporting loved ones.

Faz’a is a mode of survival, dignity, and resistance from within. Despite deliberate attempts to sow mistrust among people and crush functioning institutions, practices of faz’a reassert the presence of morals and social solidarity, values deeply rooted in the community, grounded in kinship, obligation, proximity, and care.

In this iteration of talks, we introduce and discuss the histories of faz’a, focusing on how mutual aid has sustained Palestinians throughout the ongoing Nakba, and we consider how, during the genocide, practices of faz’a have been revitalized even in the most dire circumstances and in times of crises and catastrophe.
We invite you to join this conversation, as we think about how we, as scholars, artists, and activists of Palestine, can best represent and pursue our Faz’a.

Roundtable panelists include:

  • Laura Adwan
  • Hadeel Assali
  • Amahl Bishara
  • Aseel Sawalha

Moderator:

  • Ruba Salih.

We hope you will join us in this critical conversation.

With care and solidarity,
The Insaniyyat Executive Board and Media Committee
