Webinar with Jon Wagner (Professor Emeritus UC Davis) 13 May 2024

This webinar explored visual literacy skills and materials as a resource for caregivers of people living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Illustrations and commentary focused on the significance of such skills and materials in two key contexts: (1) interactions between people who live with Alzheimer’s, their family members and immediate care-givers, and (2) interactions between the lay public, Alzheimer’s care coordinators and policy makers. Jon explored with webinar participants how greater use of visual literacy and materials in these two contexts can prompt us to reassess ideas about informed consent, assisted communication, interpersonal recognition and trust—and about the challenges of using images and text to respectfully depict the humanity of other vulnerable populations.

MORE ABOUT JON WAGNER’s WORK: https://www.alzheimers.jcwagner.com/ – This website explores the challenges and rewards of staying in touch with people who live with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia, many of whom develop language and memory loss. It looks closely at the dynamics between family and friends, care-givers and memory care residents. It focuses on what we can learn from individuals who not only care for, but vitalize people living with Alzheimer’s or dementia. And it does so through a variety of accounts, commentaries, links and documents–including photographs and videos. See also Jon Wagner’s instagram profile: https://www.instagram.com/4jonwagner/
