Postdoctoral Research Associate: “Reclaiming the State’s Security Promise from the Perspective of Statelessness” Research Project

I’m pleased to invite applications for a 4-year full-time Postdoctoral Research Associate position as part of the research project “Reclaiming the State’s Security Promise from the Perspective of Statelessness.”
The project is based in the “The Promise of Security in Catastrophic Times” Research Unit funded by DFG (German Research Foundation).

The application deadline is 14 November 2025 and the start date is 1 April 2026.

The post will involve working closely with myself as project lead (alongside other members of the Research Unit).  To give a bit more detail about the project, it focuses on politically engaged technical experts in Northern Kurdistan and their environmental practices of protection. Through in situ and collaborative ethnographic work, it asks what these practices—emerging from among the world’s largest politically stateless nation—do to and with the promise of inclusive protection traditionally associated with the state. Our aim is to reorientate the ways security discourses and practices are transforming in times of polycrisis and catastrophe towards politically stateless peoples who have long experienced this statelessness itself as a crisis and a catastrophe.
