In this webinar, Esca van Blarikom (Queen Mary University of London) presented her 20-minute collaborative film “Harbouring Illness”, and explain the participatory process leading up to the production of this film. “Harbouring Illness” is a documentary that explores the stories of three women living with long-term mental and physical health conditions. This film arose from Esca’s PhD research into the experiences of working-age adults with long-term health conditions in an East-London borough. Esca uses visual methods as open-ended ways of conducting research in order to explore a non-teleological ethics of care in a collaborative process with study participants. In the webinar, Esca will talk you through the journey leading up the film as well as share the film itself with you, followed by 30 mins for Q&A at the end.
Esca is a PhD researcher at Queen Mary University of London. With a background in medical anthropology, Esca uses ethnographic and visual methods to explore dynamics of health inequity, and the intersections of social, psychological, and physical health.
