Call for Expressions of Interest – Visual Anthropology Editorial Assistant
(2025-2028)
(This role is supported by an annual editorial honorarium of $1,400 USD)
Visual Anthropology is seeking a highly organized and motived Editorial Assistant to provide specified editorial and administrative support to the executive editors. This is a high profile position suitable for applicants who are committed to actively and creatively participating in the redevelopment of a pivotal journal for our discipline, and engaging with scholars and practitioners in the field.
The Editorial Assistant will assist with all stages of the editorial process from submission to publication. The Editorial Assistant will play a key position at VA and work in close collaboration with the Editor-in-Chief and editorial team to help manage manuscripts through the peer-review process. This is an exciting time to join *VA* as we re-launch and develop the journal to introduce new content types and formats.
The Editorial Assistant will provide editorial and administrative support to the executive editors in:
– Operating an online submission and peer review system (ScholarOne Manuscript (S1M)) to support scholarly manuscripts through the peer review process, working within defined workflows and timelines,
– Maintaining accurate records of submissions, peer review reports and related correspondence within the online submission and peer review site.
– Corresponding with authors, reviewers and editorial team members regarding manuscripts and workflows,
– Ensuring processes are followed by authors, reviewers and editorial team members in the use of the S1M online submission and peer review site to maintain compliance with best practice publishing standards.
To be considered you will need:
– Experience of anthropological research involving visual or multimodal theory, ethnographic study, methods or practice at doctoral level (e.g. as a doctoral candidate),
– Experience with working effectively as part of a team,
– The capacity to devote time each week to the role, and to attend Editorial Board meetings and training sessions as needed,
– The ability to ensure all submitted manuscripts are considered in a prompt, consistent and professional manner.
– The ability to confidently use an online peer review management system,
– Excellent written and verbal communication skills to supply timely and accurate information in a professional manner to internal and external stakeholders,
– Proficient computer skills across contemporary platforms and applications and willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies,
– Proven organizational skills and attention to detail in running processes,
– Demonstrated ability to use initiative in selecting appropriate solutions, remaining calm underpressure and knowing when to escalate an issue,
– A good understanding of the peer review process.
