Race and Ethnicity

ARE

Mission Statement

The Anthropology of Race and Ethnicity Network (ARE) was established in 2014. The network aims to (1) bring together people who work on race, ethnicity and related topics from an anthropological perspective, (2) to foster the public dissemination of anthropological knowledge and the public engagement of anthropologists on issues concerning race and ethnicity, and (3) to take steps towards more inclusive and diverse academic institutions.

(1) While important work on race, ethnicity, and related issues has been and is being conducted in anthropology, there is as yet no network to connect anthropologists within and beyond the academy in a more systematic way. ARE is a network of European anthropologists, but we explicitly seek to connect to other disciplines and geographic areas.
(2) The network seeks to foster the public engagement of anthropologists working on race, ethnicity and related issues by, for example, organizing public symposia, workshops, and panels; liaising with activist networks; and issuing statements on current affairs.
(3) The network seeks to be a social and inclusive space where people can address and discuss personal, professional, and intellectual questions in a respectful environment, particularly concerning issues faced by scholars of color. The network is committed to institutional change, concretely by developing teaching materials, building a support infrastructure (mentor network), and by engaging in institutional politics (e.g. hiring practices, institutional codes of conduct, etc.).

ARE Statement Against Anti-Black Violence and the Persistence of Systemic Racism

We, the conveners and members of the Anthropology of Race and Ethnicity Network, as part of the European Association for Social Anthropologists, note and condemn the persistence of racism and racist violence, not only in the US, but also in Europe and elsewhere… Read the full statement.

The Anthropology of Race and Ethnicity uses a mailing list to facilitate the exchange of information among network participants. Network participants share information on issues relating to the anthropological study of race and ethnicity such as events, publications, jobs, etc., or can ask for information through this list.

Both EASA members and non-members are invited to join the network.
