“Aesthetics of possibility: practicing ethnography in the subjunctive mode”
by Alexandra D’Onofrio
Multimodal ethnography lies at the intersection of collaborative, engaged, and public anthropology. In particular in my case it is about co-creating imaginative ethnographic contexts and methods with the people I work with in the field, as ways of practicing ethnography in the subjunctive mode. Stemming from my own research on experiences of border crossings, this talk proposes a consideration of co-creative ethnographic practices such as performance and animation, as ways to explore an “aesthetics of possibility”. Here images, bodies and words come together to build an imaginative bridge that allows researchers and interlocutors to venture into the realm of the ‘tentative’ and the ‘otherwise’, which is fundamental to the making of people’s life stories but also for opening up spaces for practices of care and for imagining possibilities for the discipline of anthropology itself.
