Media Anthropology

MediaNet

The Media Anthropology Network, European Association of Social Anthropologists (EASA), aims to foster international discussion and collaboration around the anthropology of media. The network also hopes to contribute to the theoretical and empirical development of this anthropological subfield.

Although many of our exchanges take place via our mailing list, we also meet regularly offline. Our first biennial general meeting took place during the 8th EASA conference, held in Vienna in September 2004. Our most recent network meetings took place at the 16th EASA conference online in July 2020 and in Belfast in July 2022 at EASA’s 17th conference. All EASA members are welcome at these network meetings and we are particularly keen to hear from people who wish to play an active role in the network.

We have also organised a number of workshops and panels over the years at locations such as Barcelona (2024), Copenhagen (2023), Belfast (2022), Munich (2019), Milan (2016) and Vienna (2015). Our most recent panel at an EASA conference was in July 2024 and focused on the anthropology of place in a digital world.

Present a paper at a Network e-seminar

Since 2004, the Media Anthropology Network has been organizing e-seminars on media anthropology related papers (e.g. working papers and already published material) and events (e.g. follow-up seminars on workshops and panels). Within these seminars, anthropologists as well as media and communication scholars have been discussing a diversity of topics via the network’s mailing list. All e-seminar related documents are openly available here.

If you are interested to contribute a paper, please email Nina Grønlykke Mollerup (University of Copenhagen, ninagm(at)hum.ku.dk) explaining your idea for the paper, and negotiate a free slot in the e-seminar schedule.

Support the EASA Media Anthropology Network

If you’d like to support the network, please email one of the network’s convenors (see above) who will get back to you to discuss how you want to work with us.
