Social Anthropology / Anthropologie Sociale back to Q1 in SCImago Journal Rankings
In 2026, Social Anthropology / Anthropologie sociale has returned to Q1 status in the SCImago Journal Rankings – and we couldn’t be more pleased! After a dip in 2022, this recognition reflects the quality, dedication, and rigour that our community of authors, reviewers and editors has invested in the journal. A heartfelt ‘thank you’ to everyone who has contributed to making this possible, and an invitation to continue this collective effort!
This follows the success from last year, when Social Anthropology / Anthropologie sociale ranked 6th among socio-cultural anthropology journals according to the Google Scholar Metrics 2025 (June 2025). Both rankings globally confirm our journal among the most visible and impactful publications in the field. They also reflect the outstanding scholarship that EASA members continue to produce, and the growing reach of the work published in our pages. Thank you all for being part of this!

These include: recommending Social Anthropology to your library, making journal articles essential reading on your students’ reading lists; asking students to download an article being used in a course rather than circulating the PDF file to increase institutional usage. Call for Editors for the EASA flagship journal, Social Anthropology / Anthropologie Sociale (2 positions)
We are looking for two new editors for EASA’s flagship journal, Social Anthropology / Anthropologie Sociale, to join the current editorial team (Martin Fotta, Leonardo Schiocchet, Magda Crăciun, Ville Laakkonen). The suitable candidates will have existing editorial experience, be able and willing to work collaboratively as part of a non-hierarchical team, and bring a clear vision for the future of the journal and its role in promoting European social anthropology. EASA is committed to the principles of equity and diversity and therefore particularly welcomes applications from under-represented communities and regions in Europe.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The position comes with a small honorarium of 2400 GBP per year and a travel allowance to attend international conferences in view of promoting the journal and networking with potential authors and reviewers. The Poznan EASA2026 conference offers the opportunity to meet informally with the current editorial team and members of the EASA Executive committee and to inquire more specific details about the position, so mark the Social Anthropology / Anthropologie Sociale reception on your calendar: Friday, 24 July, 18.00.
The tasks of the Editors are as follows:
Oversight and strategy
- To work closely with the other Editors, the Managing Editor and Book Review Editor, ensuring the editorial team meets regularly and works effectively with clear delegated responsibilities;
- To develop a strategy for the future of the journal as an innovative Open Access journal promoting the rich diversity of European social anthropology;
- To plan future issues of the journal and to actively solicit manuscripts and themed issues from scholars of all career levels across Europe and beyond.
Editorial leadership
- To review submissions prior to selection of international peer reviewers, to oversee a system of international-standard review and revision, and to make final publication decisions;
- To work closely with the publisher to ensure that published issues meet the highest international quality, monitoring the workflow to ensure the work is published on a timely and regular basis;
- To ensure communication of decision making in order to guarantee the quality of the work;
- To compose editorial introductions to issues, sections and special issues, as appropriate.
Reporting
- To liaise with the publication representatives on the EASA Executive Committee, providing six-monthly reports on the journal’s performance and direction, and presenting a yearly report to an AGM or Executive committee meeting;
- To liaise with the publisher and the International Advisory Board on matters of scholarly strategy and quality.
Applications consisting of a cover letter and CV should be sent to the EASA Secretary, Jonas Tinius, at secretary(at)easaonline.org by 23 August 2026. Shortlisting and interviews will be held in August 2026. The editors are expected to start their work from Autumn 2026 for a 4 year term of office.
