Falia Varelaki is an anthropologist with a PhD in Social Anthropology from the University of the Aegean, Greece. Her doctoral research explored cancer culture through an ethnographic study of the biopolitics of cancer, focusing on genomics, kinship, and practices of care. She conducted long-term fieldwork in hospital settings, examining interactions between healthcare professionals and patients to uncover cultural dynamics and social determinants shaping care provision and patient experiences. She holds Master’s degrees in Social and Historical Anthropology and Bioethics. She is currently a research fellow at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, working on the ERC-funded research program PregDaT. Her research interests and publications focus on issues related to health and illness, cancer, the body, research ethics, and ethnographic research methods. As part of her broader engagement with the field, she is a Board member of the Greek Association of Social Anthropologists (ΣΚΑΕ), where she coordinates the association’s Ethics Group.
