Lens on the city: an urban photography workshop
Dear Vaneasa community,
You are all invited to join *LENS ON THE CITY: AN URBAN PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP*, a two-part online workshop hosted as part of the Antiuniversity Festival 2024.
Antiuniversity Now is a collaborative experiment to challenge institutionalised education, access to learning and the mechanisms of knowledge creation and distribution. Their annual festival offers events that are open to all to organise and attend, regardless of experience, background, age or qualification. Discover your city like never before! Join a community of urban explorers in this two-part online workshop, where you'll unravel the hidden narratives that shape our urban environments. Guided by Reuben Ross, a visual anthropologist and founder of Streetology.Institute, you’ll learn to see and capture the world around you from a fresh, insightful perspective.
*Workshop outline*
Part 1: Reuben will introduce some foundational concepts of urban ethnography. Participants will engage in an informal brainstorming session, critically reflecting on daily life in their respective cities. Each participant will select a public space in their city – such as a street, square, park or beach – and present it to the group. Afterwards, participants will be asked to visit their chosen space in their own time, documenting it with their camera or phone using the ethnographic techniques discussed.
Part 2: A week later, participants will reconvene to share their photos, reflect on their work and discuss their findings. This is your chance to learn from others, exchange ideas and gain new insights into urban life.
*Details*
Who can join? This workshop is open to anyone, from anywhere in the world, regardless of educational background or experience. An interest in urban culture and photography is all that’s needed. A professional camera is not necessary; your phone camera will suffice!
How to register? To keep the group small, a limited number of tickets will be available. Please register at https://streetology.institute/booking. A Zoom link will be emailed to you the day before the workshop.
