Apply now! Master Programme Curriculum Visual Anthropology in Göttingen, Germany

Dear colleagues, dear students,

from 01.04. to 01.06.2025, we welcome applications for the Master Programme Curriculum Visual Anthropology (CVA) at the Department of Cultural Anthropology/European Ethnology at the University of Gttingen, Germany (start: Winterterm 2025/26). Please, feel free to forward this email to anybody who might be interested.

Today, the ability to assess current as well as historical dimensions of audio-visual cultures critically is more important than ever. The same applies to a reflexive approach to one's own visual productions. The aim of the CVA is to equip its participants with the skills needed to master these. Practice-oriented training in the methods of ethnographic film production at the interface with current developments, for example, in the fields of documentary film or art, constitutes the core of the CVA. This also includes a variety of theoretical aspects and approaches from visual anthropology, media anthropology and visual studies. The CVA contains a three-semester-long teaching research project that is an integral part of a full Masters of Arts in Cultural Anthropology/European Ethnology. In addition to numerous film-making exercises and the realisation of a film project work of their own, students also have the opportunity to complete their master's degree with an audio-visual project for example, by submitting a film as part of their master thesis.

Apart from the mandatory administrative fees payable at universities in the Germans federal state of Lower Saxony, there are no tuition fees for the Master Programme CVA.

For international applicants, proof of sufficient German language skills (DSH min. level 2, TestDaF min. 4xTDN4, Goethe Zertifikat C2 or telc C1 Hochschule) is required.

The application period is from 01.04. to 01.06.2025.
