This book examines the relationship between migration and socioeconomic sta= tus. In particular, it charts a set of middle-class aspirations that lead p= eople to move to a nearby nation that is similar in wealth and social indic= ators =96 a type of horizontal relocation that it terms "sideways migration= ." It chronicles the experiences of a diverse group of French middle-class = citizens who moved to London during the late 20th and early 21st centuries.= Based on longitudinal ethnographic fieldwork over a ten-year period, this = book engages at length with their strategies of emplacement through the len= s of Pierre Bourdieu's concept of social space. Against a backdrop of heigh= tened anxieties about immigration, the disruptions of the Brexit process an= d, more recently, a pandemic, it shows how middle-class migration is affect= ed by processes of dislocation and relocation, settling and unsettling, and= the search for belonging. This book points to new directions for understan= ding transnationalism among middle-class migrants through its consideration= of the French emigration apparatus and the role of the multisite French na= tion in the lives of its citizens living abroad. It will be key reading for= scholars and students interested in emigration and migration from anthropo= logy, sociology, geography, political science, history, and international s= tudies.
Thank you,
Deborah Reed-Danahay Professor of Anthropology University at Buffalo der5@buffalo.edu

Precarious Motherhood explores the experiences of racially minoritised moth= ers living with insecure immigration status and financial hardship in Londo= n, UK. It exposes the impact of hostile immigration policies and precarity = on mothers' interpersonal relationships and access to support. The author d= raws attention to how mothers manage the constraints they face and enact be= longing. She then explores the impact on mothers' couple relationships, fri= endships, adult kin relationships and faith-based networks. The book underl= ines the vital role of personal relationships in providing access to resour= ces and support, but also demonstrates how precariously positioned mothers = must carefully navigate relational tensions in their everyday lives. It hig= hlights how social infrastructure facilitates relational practices, helping= mothers to sustain their children's wellbeing and their own.
