"The Moving Museum" - Film Screening and Discussion with Theo Eshetu (filmmaker), Jonas Tinius (anthropologist), and Marco Scotini (curator) at NABA Milan, 28 February

Dear all

I would like to draw your attention and invite you to a public discussion and film screening with Berlin-based filmmaker Theo Eshetu this week at the Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti (NABA) in Milan that I organise as part of a series of seminars on Visual Anthropology, Curating, and the Anthropology of Art. The days after the screening, Theo Eshetu will open an intervention at the Mudec (Museo delle Culture) in Milan which forms part of an exhibition on the concept and materiality of the “vitrine” and complements the problems raised by the film.

Please register in advance for the filmscreening by sending me an email, and find more information on the exhibition via this link here (https://www.mudec.it/en/exposure-art-culture-fashion-in-and-out-of-the-showcase/). The conversation will not be live-streamed, but may be recorded.

Best Jonas

The Moving Museum: Arrivals and Departures (Theo Eshetu, 2021)

Film screening followed by a discussion with Theo Eshetu (filmmaker), Jonas Tinius (anthropologist), and Marco Scotini (curator and course leader, Visual Arts and Curatorial Studies, NABA)

Wednesday, 28 February 2024 7pm, Room T.00, NABA Milano Via C. Darwin 20, 20143 Milano

Video artist Theo Eshetu documents, accompanies, and reflects on the process of a museum in motion - literally and speculatively. Having filmed and studied the process of moving Berlin’s Ethnological Museum and the Museum of Asian Art - two vast collections - into the city’s rebuilt City Castle and Humboldt Forum, Eshetu merges poetry, documentary, fiction, and narration to think about the many things and beings that are moved along with a museum. How have the museums and their collections shifted national identity, colonial history, cosmopolitan futures? The film is a reflection on the role of anthropological world museums today and the capacity of artistic, fictional, speculative narrations to scrutinise their legacies.

The event takes place as part of the seminars Phenomenology of Contemporary Art, Visual Anthropology, and Curatorial Studies taught by Jonas Tinius in the MA Visual Arts and Curatorial Studies at NABA.
